Road Win Lifts Roxford to 1-0 Lead in MS
With second baseman Bill Wright
leading the charge, the Roxford Excelsiors got a road win over the
Delta Stars, 13-8, in Game 1 of the Metro Series today. Wright was 4-5
with 2 doubles and 2 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 3 at
Sportstime Ballpark to help Roxford take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7
series.
Wright had an important at-bat with a runner on 2nd in the top of the
sixth, when he hit a run-scoring double. The Excelsiors went on to win.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow here at Sportstime Ballpark.

Raucous Crowd Propels Stars to 6-3 Victory
The
Delta Stars got a great start from 40-year-old left-hander John Hewett,
as Delta won the contest, 6-3, at Sportstime Ballpark. Hewett threw 8.0
innings of 5-hit ball in the win, which knotted the best-of-7 series at
1-1.
Hewett was in the zone all game. He frustrated Roxford hitters while
giving the Stars 8 innings of quality work. Hewett threw 118 pitches,
allowing 5 hits and getting 9 punchouts.
Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday at Roxford Field.

Delta takes 2-1 Lead in MS
The Delta Stars hold an early advantage in the Metro Series, thanks to the "old man" of the franchise, Armand Field.
Field, 40, was in control at Roxford Field today, leading the Stars to
victory, 4-3, over the Roxford Excelsiors in Game 3. Field threw 9.0
innings allowing 3 runs. Delta now holds a 2-1 edge in the best-of-7
series.
The outcome might have been different for Delta, had it not been for Ed
Harvey, the 26-year old catcher . Harvey stroked a run-scoring single
in the top of the eighth inning to put Delta up, 4-1. For the game, he
was 2 for 4, including 1 double and 1 single.

GAME 4

Cels Tie Best-of-Seven Series at 2-2
Trailing by a game in the Metro Series, Andrew Beamon was ready for his start.
The right-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Roxford Field
today, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Roxford
Excelsiors to victory in Game 4 of the Metro Series. Beamon held the
Delta Stars to 7 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 3. The win brought
Roxford into a 2-2 tie in the best-of-7 series.
Beamon pitched a complete game for Roxford. The 34-year-old
right-hander was charged with no runs on 7 hits. He struck out 3 during
his 102-pitch performance.

Pivotal Game 5 Goes to Host Excelsiors, 5-4
Riding the 3-hit performance
of left fielder Mark Heil, the Roxford Excelsiors stopped the visiting
Delta Stars, 5-4, in Game 5 of the Metro Series today. Heil went 3-4
with a triple and 2 singles. He scored 2 times for the Excelsiors, who
now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 2.
Toad Beaty, the Roxford catcher, contributed a run-scoring single in
the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 4-3, Excelsiors. For
the game, Beaty was 2 for 3 with 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI.
The shifts back to Sportstime Ballpark in Delta for game six.

GAME 6

Roxford Wins Metro Series!
With
a 7-5 win over the Delta Stars tonight at Sportstime Ballpark, the
Roxford Excelsiors wrapped up their 1st title in team history.
Roxford left little doubt who was the better club. "Team" was the word
of the day as the Excelsiors celebrated the culmination of their banner
year in the victors clubhouse following the game.
A jovial mood filled the air as Roxford celebrated into the night. The
city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration"
in the works.
The champions completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the Metro Leagues East Circuit and a 41-19 record.

Series MVP:
Batting Champ Award
The
Metropolis Blue Sox right fielder made the season a nightmare for his
opposition, batting .430, rattling off 99 hits including 18 doubles, 5
triples and 2 home runs. He scored 62 times and collected 26 runs
batted in.
Most Valuable Player Award
Joe
McCoy is only going to get better as he gets older.His winning campaign
featured a .412 batting average and a .502 on-base percentage this
year. In 60 games he piled up 94 hits, 20 doubles, 1 triple, 24 home
runs, 69 RBIs and 68 runs scored. Jordan Ballou of the Metropolis Blue
Sox finished second in voting, while Ellis Swaim, last years MVP of the
Oakdale Spiders finished third.
King Hurler Award
Harvey
Watson of the Metropolis Blue Sox completed the year with a 14-3
record. He started 20 times, threw 168.1 innings, chalked up 154
strikeouts and 57 walks, limited hitters to a .241 batting average and
posted an impressive 2.62 ERA. Andrew Beamon of the Roxford
Excelsiors finished second in voting, while Curt Sell of the Metropolis Blue Sox finished third.
